About Timothy in the Bible

Acts 16:1-5 introduces Timothy, a disciple from Lystra whose mother was a Jewish believer and whose father was Greek. Believers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him, and Paul took him along in the work of the gospel. Paul calls him his true son in the faith (1 Timothy 1:2), remembers the sincere faith first seen in Timothy's grandmother Lois and mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5), and says Timothy knew the sacred writings from childhood (2 Timothy 3:14-15). Timothy served the churches as Paul's coworker and messenger, including strengthening the Thessalonians (1 Thessalonians 3:1-6) and being sent to Corinth (1 Corinthians 4:17). Paul charged him to remain in Ephesus, teach sound doctrine, set an example for believers, and entrust the teaching to faithful people who could teach others (1 Timothy 1:3-7; 4:12-16; 2 Timothy 2:1-2).
